Moka Pot with coffee

How to make Moka Pot coffee?

Moka pot is considered the closest thing you can get to espresso in taste. It is intense and delicious when brewed correctly. But can often end up as bitter and cooked coffee.

Tamper

Make sure your tamper is the right size. Any type of tamper can be used. If you want to be extra consistent, buy a calibrated tamper . It will give you the same amount of pressure every time, so you don't have to worry about it.

Let's make coffee!

  1. Amount (weight) of ground coffee in the filter and water you have in the bottom. When it comes to the Moka pot, a 1:10 ratio is the standard. That's about 30g of ground coffee to 300g of water. But you can of course try it out with less water.

  2. Start by heating up cold water in the bottom of the Moka pot. Or heat up water in a pot or kettle. In any case, it's a good idea to heat up the water beforehand, before you grind the coffee and start. This will make the process go faster. Let the water cool down a bit, to about 90 degrees.

  3. How coarse should you grind the coffee? Here you can grind close to espresso, try it out, grind finer and finer and feel what it does to the taste. Like all coffee, this is a matter of taste and preference.

  4. Optional! Place an Aeropress filter under the bottom on top of the Moka pot, so that you get better filtration. And moisten the filter so that it sticks to the bottom.

  5. Optional! Use the WDT to break up clumps and even out the coffee in the filter. This will give you a smoother water flow and prevent channeling.

  6. Screw everything together and place the mocha pot on the hotplate with the lid open. It is then easier to control the process when you see the coffee flowing out of the top.

  7. The crucial thing now is to keep a steady flow of coffee, and avoid it starting to boil and bubble out of the top. As soon as the coffee starts to come out, turn down the heat. If necessary, take the pot off the hotplate and place it a little further in, so that it does not get too hot. Keep the heat low enough that it flows quietly all the way.

  8. When it starts to bubble and sizzle at the end, take the mocha pot off the hotplate and hold the bottom under cold running water, so that it stops bubbling.

Enjoy!

  1. Pour in the rest of the water and circulate the Aeropress quietly, so that it mixes gently. You do not need to stir.

  2. Put the top on carefully so that you create a vacuum and that the water does not continue to flow. Set aside for 1 min and 15 sec.

  3. Start by pressing gently on the top. Press gently all the way through, about the weight of your arm. It should take about 1 minute to press through everything. When you're done, pull the top up a little so that it stops dripping. Done!
