How to make Aeropress coffee?

AeroPress is a very simple brewing method that you can take with you on trips or enjoy at home. Below is a recipe we like.

Tamper

Make sure the tamper is the correct size. All types of tampers can be used. If you want to be extra consistent, get a calibrated tamper. It applies the same pressure every time, so you don't have to think about it.

Let’s make coffee!

Start by heating cold water in a pot or kettle. Bring it to a boil and then set it aside.

  1. Amount (weight) of ground coffee in the filter and the amount of water you pour in.
When it comes to AeroPress, a 1:16 ratio is a good starting point—that’s about 15g of ground coffee to 250g of water. If the beans are medium roast, you can increase to 16g; if they’re dark roast, go up to 17g.

  2. How coarse should you grind the coffee?
You can start by grinding as coarse as possible—somewhere between French press and espresso. But fine enough that the water flows slowly through the coffee. Like with all coffee, it’s a matter of taste. Experiment—grind finer and finer and notice how it affects the flavor.

  3. Pour the coffee into the bottom of the AeroPress and level it out so that there’s an even amount of coffee all around.

  4. Bloom the coffee. Pour in a small amount of water slowly—just enough for the coffee to absorb most of it. Let it sit with this water for 45 seconds.

  5. Pour in the rest of the water and swirl the AeroPress gently so it mixes softly. No need to stir.

  6. Gently place the top on to create a vacuum and prevent the water from continuing to drip. Set it aside for 1 minute and 15 seconds.

  7. Start pressing slowly on the top. Press gently all the way through, roughly using the weight of your arm. It should take about 1 minute to press everything through.

When you're done, lift the top slightly to stop any dripping. Done!
